Program at a GlanceWe offer a training program designed to prepare students to be versatile and independent researchers in academia and industry. Our five year program combines mentored laboratory research with a rigorous and modern curriculum as well as an emphasis on the students' professional development.

Our students take a comprehensive core curriculum in their first year, which provides an introduction to all the major fields of neuroscience: cellular and molecular neuroscience, structure and function of the nervous system, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and the neural basis of behavior. In the second year, our students take advanced electives in more specialized topics related to their thesis research.
Research
Mentored laboratory research is the foundation of our training program. Students rotate through different laboratories in their first year to help them select their thesis mentor. A first year student advisor helps guide students in their choice of rotations, each of which lasts one quarter. Students begin their thesis research as soon as they have selected their thesis mentor, and they focus exclusively on this research once their coursework is completed.
Professional Development
We place a special emphasis on the professional development of our students. All students participate in a research seminar series on a weekly basis throughout their five years, in addition to regular group meetings in the laboratory of their thesis mentor. Students also take a module in professional ethics and attend research seminars presented by distinguished speakers from other institutions. In addition, our students are expected to publish the results of their research in high profile journals and to present their data at national and international scientific meetings.
