9. Course Registration

9.1. Course Loads

  • Prior to passing the Candidacy Examination, all students who are not on University fellowships must register for a minimum of nine (9) credit hours per quarter except during the Summer Quarter, when the minimum is seven (7) credit hours.
  • Students who are on University Fellowships and have not passed their candidacy examination must register for a minimum of 15 credits per quarter while they are fellowship recipients.
  • Students who have passed their Candidacy Examination including students on University fellowships must register for three (3) credit hours each quarter, including Summer Quarter. Students must obtain the permission of their advisor and the NGSP Director(s) if they want to register for more than three (3) credit hours.

Graduate courses outside the NGSP may count toward the minimum credit hour requirement, but undergraduate and audited courses do not count.

Research credit reflects time spent by a graduate student pursuing thesis or dissertation research and time invested by faculty members in supervising such research. Therefore, students spending time on their dissertation research must register for the 999 course of the advisor’s home department (see Section 8.4).

9.2. Procedures for Quarterly Registration

Graduate Students are expected to register on-line each quarter through the University Registrar’s Office. Students should discuss their scheduling plans with their advisors, especially if they plan to enroll in courses not in their Program of Study. Students needing assistance with registration and/or scheduling should contact the Program Administrator.
