Within the university
- The Hayes Graduate Research Forum takes place once a year in March and showcases the most innovative and exciting research being done by OSU graduate students across campus and across disciplines. Awards are given out for the best oral and poster presentations.
- Local, national, and international conferences
- The Research Commons is a space specifically designed to facilitate inter-disciplinary collaborations across campus. They offer a variety of workshops, consultation services, and project assistance to graduate students, post-docs, and faculty on topics ranging from finding private funding, managing big data, and improving communication skills. Research Commons, located on the 3rd floor of the 18th Avenue Library, also has rooms that can be booked to support collaborative research.
- The Ohio Union Activities Board (OAUB) Grad/Prof programming team works to provide graduate students with avenues to improve and expand their professional skills. They offer interactive seminars on all aspects of the job search (both academic and non-academic) as well as rotating workshops on a range of professional development topics.
Career Development
Within the program/department
- The Neuroscience Graduate Student Organization (NGSO) has a Professional Development committee which works to find and establish resources for NGP students to utilize as they build their resumes during graduate school and consider their career options after graduate school.
- Every other spring, NGP participates in IGP Career Day. Speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds and fields are invited to speak to graduate students about their career trajectory, why they chose their current position, and provide advice for those wishing to pursue similar career paths. Students have the opportunity to interact with individual speakers at lunch and build valuable networking connections. Past speakers have included medical science liaisons, NIH review officers, Nikon technicians, patent lawyers, full-time lecturers at small liberal arts colleges, and even the CEO of our local science museum, COSI.
Within the University
- The Graduate School offers many free online services that help students to explore the breadth of career options that are available to them after they graduate with their PhD. This includes free access to Versatile PhD, a secure online portal designed to help students identify and pursue non-academic careers in science.
- University Career Services puts on several workshop series and hosts online and on-campus resources to help students make networking connections as they look to their life after graduation.
